I am a seeker of good, wholesome, valuable, character-building books (especially for kids), and I want to share them ALL here! I cannot get over the immediate results I'm seeing in my daughter from reading to her every day. Those stories just sink right down into her little heart, and she thinks about them months later! Her imagination is blossoming, and she comes up with THE BEST games based off of stories we've read (or listened to) together.

Recently I was getting into the car. E was already in there. It was dark outside, and I could hardly see. In a barely audible whisper, E says, "Be quiet! This is an underground railroad house! Is anyone following you? Shh...get in really quiet!" I mean, the fact that my 6 year old even knows what the underground railroad is is astounding to me! We read the Harriet Tubman biography months ago! I think reading aloud my be the best parenting secret ever!
Here are our wins from the month of November. The first six are "kids" books (although I enjoyed them as well), and the last one was just for me. You can click on the title of the book or the picture itself and it will take you straight to the book on Amazon! Enjoy!
Betsy-Tacey by Maud Hart Lovelace
Loved this one. It’s perfect for little girls. A good old-fashioned story written in the 1940’s. It’s about a sweet friendship that develops between two little neighbor girls who become inseparable. This is the first book of a series, and it's a free audio book on Hoopla!
The Moffats by Eleanor Estes
Another good old-fashioned story taking place in the early 1900’s about a family who has fallen on hard times. It’s just filled with good old family fun, sweet family traditions and great values. This is also the first book of a series and a free audio book on Hoopla!
Those Kids in Proverbsville by Elizabeth Rice Handford
E received this for her birthday from a friend. We read one story a night. Each chapter teaches valuable lessons from the book of Proverbs about kids who live in Proverbsville. I liked that the chapters are pretty short.
We are loving this series! One of you recommended it to us, and it is just SO GOOD! It takes place in the early 1900’s. It’s about the journey of a family of children who lose their mother and whose father abandons them. Throughout the books, you’ll journey with them as they leave home, go to an orphanage, eventually end up on an orphan train, and finally find a family. Looking for Home (Book 1) is the story of the family at the orphanage. Whistle Stop West (Book 2) is the story of them on the orphan train heading West.
Bonus points, this WHOLE SERIES can be found as free audio books on Hoopla! Woohoo!
For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay
This book is excellent. It’s primarily an educational book based off of a Charlotte Mason viewpoint. It’s so very good. I am a firm believer that if you are a mother, you are a teacher whether your children are in school or not. There are so many gems even if you do not homeschool your children. Also a free audio book on Hoopla!
As always, I am always, always, always looking for new book recommendations, so please share any good ones you come across. We'll check them out and feature them on the blog! Now let's get reading!!!
